Frequently Asked Questions

Where the @#$%& am I supposed to find a story for the catch this year?

On our resources page, we have a listing of several places to start looking.

Do I have to follow the story I use to the letter?

The challenge this year is to ADAPT the story to your digital film. How you do that is up to you. At the Gala, we will be having approx. 1 minute of the original story read, so the audience will be able to see just how you adapted the original piece.

Do I have to find someone else's story?

No. If you have a story you wrote in Elementary school, then you are free to use it.

Does it have to be a short story?

No... "Story" in this case, means any sort of creative writing - a play, a poem, a journal entry. As long as it meets the requirements of being written by someone in Elementary School, who is now over 18. If you have any doubts about it's eligibility, please contact us at info@digi60.org

What exactly qualifies as "Elementary School"

Elementary school is qualified as Kindergarten to Grade 8.

My friend is also in DIGI60, and s/he has lots of stories, but I have none. Can I use one of his/her?

As long as s/he is fine with letting you use it, by all means! Where you find the story is up to you - as long as you have the permission of the original author.

The writer of my story is deceased. Do I still need permission?

Copyright Law in Canada is life plus 70 years, so if the story is that old, then you do not, although proof of public domain is required. Otherwise, the executor of their estate will be required to sign the Writer's agreement.

One of my crew members also is participating in Digi60. Can I still use them?

Yes. As long as you aren't preventing him or her from doing the other. Crew can be limited in Ottawa. There's no rule that says crew members or even Producers can work on only one film. Just bear in mind, that 30 days is a very limited time, so people who are involved in more than one project may cause you scheduling problems.

My friend and I want to do a film together. Do we BOTH have to sign up as separate filmmakers?

No. Filmmaking teams are more than welcome. One person will however have to sign as "The Producer" for the purpose of the paperwork, however.
